12 Days of Christmas Carols

Throughout the month of December, the fine musicians of Newark FUMC posted a “Twelve Days of Christmas Carols” Celebration to ensure every member of the congregation could enjoy the music of Advent safely. The video links for all 12 selections were posted below beginning Dec. 2 through Christmas Eve. These are also available on our Facebook page and YouTube. Lyrics are at the bottom of this page. We have chosen to keep these selections available on our website for the time being. Enjoy!

Coventry Carol, Lyrics

CHORUS:  Lully, lullay, thou little tiny child, Bye bye, lully, lullay.
Lully, lullay, thou little tiny child, Bye bye, lully, lullay

O sisters too, how may we do, For to preserve this day This poor youngling for whom we do sing, “Bye bye, lully, lullay”?

Herod the King in his raging, charged he hath this day, His men of might in his own sight All young children to slay.

That woe is me, poor child, for thee, And ever mourn and sigh, For thy parting neither say nor sing, “Bye bye, lully, lullay.

We Three Kings, Lyrics:

We Three Kings of Orient are, Bearing gifts we traverse afar, Field and fountain, Moor and mountain, Following yonder Star.

CHORUS: O Star of Wonder, Star of Night, Star with royal beauty bright, Westward leading, still proceeding, Guide us to Thy perfect light.

Born a King on Bethlehem plain, Gold I bring to crown Him again, King forever, Ceasing never, Over us all to reign.

What Child is This, Lyrics:

What child is this who laid to rest, On Mary’s lap is sleeping, Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, While shepherds watch are keeping

CHORUS:  This, this is Christ the king  Whom shepherds guard and angels sing haste, haste to bring him laud, The babe, the son of Mary

Why lies he in such mean estate, Where ox and ass are feeding The end of fear for all who hear, The silent Word is speaking

So bring him incense, gold and myrrh, Come peasant king to love him; The king of kings salvation brings, Let loving hearts enthrone him.

While Shepherds Watch’d Their Flocks, Lyrics:

While shepherds watch’d their flocks by night, All seated on the ground, The angel of the Lord came down, And glory shone around. “Fear not! ” said he, for mighty dread Had seized their troubled mind; “Glad tidings of great joy I bring To you and all mankind.”

“To you, in David’s town this day, Is born of David’s line The Savior who is Christ the Lord, And this shall be the sign: “The heav’nly Babe you there shall find To human view displayed, All meanly wrapped in swathing bands, And in a manger laid.”

Thus spake the seraph, and forthwith Appeared a shining throng Of angels praising God on high, who thus addressed their song: “All glory be to God on high, And to the earth be peace. Good will henceforth from heav’n to men Begin and never cease!”

It Came Upon the Midnight Clear, Lyrics:

It came upon the midnight clear, That glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth, To touch their harps of gold: “Peace on the earth, good will to men, From heaven’s all-gracious King.” The world in solemn stillness lay, To hear the angels sing.

For lo!, the days are hastening on, By prophet seen of old, When with the ever-circling years shall come the time foretold. When peace shall over all the earth Its ancient splendors fling, And the whole world give back the song Which now the angels sing.

O Come, All Ye Faithful, Lyrics:

O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; Come and behold him, born the King of angels; O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord!

Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation, O sing, all ye citizens of heaven above! Glory to God, all glory in the highest; O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord!

Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning, Jesus, to thee be all glory given; Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing; O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord!

He Shall Feed His Flock

The stained glass windows in the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church in Newark, NY, can remind us of the Air “He Shall Feed His Flock Like a Shepherd” from Handel’s Messiah.

Looking at the stained glass from within the Sanctuary, the panel on the left shows our Savior holding a lamb.  The words from verse 1 are “He shall feed His flock like a shepherd; and He shall gather the lambs with His arms, and carry them in His bosom, and gently lead those that are with young.”

The stained glass panel on the right shows our Savior with outstretched arms beckoning us to come unto him.  The words from verse 2 are, “Come unto Him, all ye that labour. Come unto Him that are heavy laden and He will give you rest.  Take his yoke upon you and learn of Him; for He is meek and lowly of heart; and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”

These are such beautiful and significant words for the times we are living in.  We hope you enjoy our rendition of this classical piece and wish you all a Blessed Christmas and peace in the New Year.

Silent Night! Holy Night!, Lyrics

Silent night, holy night, All is calm, all is bright. ‘Round yon virgin Mother and Child, Holy infant so tender and mild. Sleep in heavenly peace. Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight! Glories stream from heaven afar; Heavenly hosts sing Al-le-lu-ia! Christ the Savior is born! Christ the Savior is born!

Silent night, holy night! Son of God, oh, love’s pure light, Radiant beams from Thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace. Jesus, Lord at Thy birth. Jesus, Lord at Thy birth.

O Come, O Come Emmanuel, Lyrics

O come, O come, Emmanuel! Redeem thy captive Israel, That into exile drear is gone, Far from the face of God’s dear Son. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel, Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, thou Branch of Jesse! draw The quarry from the lion’s claw; From the dread caverns of the grave, From nether hell, thy people save. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel, Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, O come, thou Dayspring bright! Pour on our souls thy healing light; Dispel the long night’s lingering gloom, And pierce the shadows of the tomb. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel, Shall come to thee, O Israel.

Let Al Mortal Flesh Keep Silence, Lyrics

Let all mortal flesh keep silence, And with fear and trembling stand; Ponder nothing earthly-minded, For with blessing in his hand, Christ our God to earth descendeth, Our full homage to demand.

King of kings, yet born of Mary, As of old on earth he stood, Lord of lords, in human vesture, In the body and the blood; He will give to all the faithful His own self for heavenly food.

Away In A Manger, Lyrics

Away in a manger, No crib for His bed, The little Lord Jesus Lay down His sweet head. The stars in the sky Look down where He lay, The little Lord Jesus Asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing The poor Baby wakes, But little Lord Jesus No crying He makes. I love Thee, Lord Jesus Look down from the sky, And stay by my side ‘Til morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus I ask Thee to stay Close by me forever And love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children In Thy tender care, And take us to Heaven to live with Thee there.

Ave Maria, Lyrics:

Ave Maria Gratia plena. Maria, gratia plena. Maria, gratia plena. Ave, ave dominus, Dominus tecum. Benedicta tu in mulieribus. Et benedictus. Et benedictus fructus ventris. Ventris tuae, Jesus. Ave Maria

Ave Maria Mater Dei. Ora pro nobis peccatoribus. Ora pro nobis. Ora, ora pro nobis peccatoribus. Nunc et in hora mortis. Et in hora mortis nostrae. Et in hora mortis nostrae. Et in hora mortis nostrae Ave Maria.

O Holy Night Lyrics:

O Holy Night the stars are brightly shining. It is the night of the dear Saviour’s birth; Long lay the world in sin and error pining, ‘Till he appeared and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn;

Chorus: Fall on your knees, Oh hear the angel voices! O night divine! O night when Christ was born. O night, O holy night, O night divine.

Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming; With glowing hearts by his cradle we stand: So, led by light of a star sweetly gleaming, Here come the wise men from Orient land, The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger, In all our trials born to be our friend;

Chorus: He knows our need, To our weakness no stranger! Behold your King! Before Him lowly bend! Behold your King! your King! before him bend!

Truly He taught us to love one another; His law is Love and His gospel is Peace; Chains shall he break, for the slave is our brother, And in his name all oppression shall cease, Sweet hymns of joy in grateful Chorus raise we; Let all within us praise his Holy name!

Chorus: Fall on your knees, Oh hear the angel voices! O night divine! O night when Christ was born. O night, O holy night, O night divine.

We Wish You a Merry Christmas, Lyrics

We wish you a merry Christmas. We wish you a merry Christmas, We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year. Good tidings we bring to you and your kin. We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year,

Oh, bring us some figgy pudding. Oh, bring us some figgy pudding. Oh, bring us some figgy pudding, And bring it right here. Good tidings we bring to you and your kin. We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year.

We won’t go until we get some. We won’t go until we get some. We won’t go until we get some, So bring it right here. Good tidings we bring to you and your kin. We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year.
